An exciting night filled with the music of Stan Kenton and his iconic jazz orchestra! Kenton was an American jazz pianist, composer, and pioneering bandleader. Known for his powerful bands which played a broad range of swing, Afro-Cuban, and progressive jazz, Kenton holds levels of influence on big band music comparable to jazz legends such as Duke Ellington and Count Basie.
Stan Kenton was a prominent, influential, and innovative figure in jazz in the US for several decades. He is known for having pushed the boundaries of swing with power and emotion, and pioneering incorporations of Afro-Cuban music with the established American big band sound.
Under the direction of local bassist and arranger Toshi Clinch, the Jazz Forum big band is a congregation of some of Melbourne’s brightest university-aged jazz musicians, who are keen to present the music of one of jazz's finest bandleaders.
